design
Our engineers are mainly from Mechanical, Mechatronics, and Electrical engineering specialisations. They can apply the concepts, theories, and principles taught in the classroom to a race car. The nature of Formula SAE requires a new car to be built each year, resulting in each student being able to play a crucial part in the cars’ design year after year.
manufacture
Students find this aspect of the club the most interesting as they apply the knowledge gained in practical classes to build a part they designed themselves. In the manufacturing phase, students learn the values of concepts such as designing for manufacturability and assembly.
testing
There are few opportunities during University studies to see a final product through to production. The team gives students the unique opportunity to test and validate their work. They can see their part within a complex assembly and analyse failures to iterate their work to improve the car further.
racing
All of the hard work during the year comes down to one race weekend. Students learn how to operate under pressure while their product is getting scrutineered and when it’s competing on track. Students get to see what they designed, built, and tested in action, which is the highlight of many students’ time at University.
